Awarded Best in Show at the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show for his dynamic blend of Swedish modernism and English romanticism, Ulf Nordfjell is one of the world's leading contemporary garden designers, and this is the first book in English about his work. A master when it comes to composing with perennials, grass and bulbs, Nordfjell also has a deep engagement with the surrounding landscape. Materials such as Swedish granite, steel and timber give his gardens structure and a powerful identity, animated by water and light. Every detail of the composition is meticulously worked out, and the gardens reveal new aspects through the seasons. This book covers fourteen gardens, including the 2009 Best in Show and the 2007 Gold Medal gardens at Chelsea. Accompanying Ulf Nordfjell's thoughtful and lucid text, Jerry Harpur's superb photographs, taken over several years, represent the gardens in all seasons in both general views and details.
Acclaimed landscape architect Ulf Nordfjell works on public as well as private gardens throughout Sweden and worldwide. He was awarded a Gold Medal for his 2007 garden 'A Tribute to Linnaeus' at the Chelsea Flower Show, and not only a second Gold but Best in Show at his next appearance in 2009. Brought up in northern Sweden, the son of a forester, he has a deep commitment to the environment, and his distinctive style is a fusion of ecology and the Swedish sense of modern design. He is based in Stockholm. Jerry Harpur photographs gardens and plants all over the world. He has contributed pictures to well over three hundred books and won awards on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Garden Writers' Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
