ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR Villette was the fourth of four novels written by Charlotte Bront� (1816-1855) and was originally published in 1853 under her pen name Currer Bell. It is an autobiographical fiction novel based upon her own experiences in England and Belgium. Lucy Snowe, a young Englishwoman, narrates the trials, losses and struggles of her life in the English countryside and in the town of Villette in the fictional kingdom of Labassecour. Charlotte Bront� had four published novels: Jane Eyre (1847), Shirley (1849), Villette (1853) and The Professor (1857). Charlotte Bront� and two of her sisters, Anne Bront� and Emily Bront�, jointly wrote a book of poems which was originally published in 1846 under their pen names Currer, Acton and Ellis Bell.
