Description

This major publication about Maori participation in the First World War is written by NZ's leading Maori military historian Dr Monty Soutar, author of the award-winning Nga Tama Toa C Company, Maori Battalion. A fascinating look at the Pioneer Battalion (the Battalion created for Maori to serve) that will shed light on the reasons why some men signed on to serve, and others staunchly resisted the call to join the imperial conflict. As with Dr Soutar's first book, it combines the story of the war and the role of Maori in it, with the words and thoughts of the men themselves, as well as those back home. Over 300 images, many from family collections and not published before.

Author Biography:

A senior historian with Manatu Taonga / The Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Monty Soutar ONZM (Ngati Porou, Ngati Awa, Ngai Tai, Ngati Kahungunu) was the World War One Historian-in-Residence at the Auckland War Memorial Museum (2014 17). He has worked widely with iwi and Maori communities, in particular while writing Nga Tama Toa (David Bateman, 2008), which told the story of C Company of 28 (Maori) Battalion in the Second World War. Currently he is leading a digital project on Treaty of Waitangi settlements in New Zealand. He has been a teacher, soldier and university lecturer and has held a number of appointments on national bodies, including the First World War Centenary Panel and the Waitangi Tribunal.
