The analysis of gender and political inequality, and the women's movements that have contested it, have concentrated on the West. These studies of Argentina, Nicaragua and Cuba, alongside comparative discussions of socialism, women's movements and citizenship, examine the complex, and persistent, interaction of states and women's movements, and the diversity of responses engendered.

Author Biography:

MAXINE MOLYNEUX is a specialist in political sociology and development. She teaches at the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of London. She has written books on the Ethiopian revolution and South Yemen, and co-edited Hidden Histories of Gender and the State in Latin America and Gender and Justice in Latin America.
