Flames of War Friday: Full Speed Ahead!

By David

Since Flamescon was announced I've shifted things up a gear to get my forces ready and be able to play some more games with both my Market Garden list and my Japanese.

Operation Market Garden: 30 Corps on the Move

Last weekend was another game day for our Market Garden campaign and it was high time for the Allies to finally start gaining some much needed momentum and secure the roads to Arnheim.

This time I was matched up against the supreme German commander and his Fallschirmjäger infantry with a platoon of Stug G assault guns in support. However since I won the roll to choose the battle location I picked a spot where I would receive an additional Sherman platoon and some Sextons self-propelled artillery as extra support to help shift things in my favour.

I then quickly got another advantage, as an early Allied victory in another game meant that my opponents army was out of supply and under the Firestorm rules that meant his troops' morale dropped from fearless to confident.

My run of luck continued when we rolled Surrounded as the mission, which let me deploy either side of the battlefield with the Germans in the centre and two of my Sherman platoons were able to destroy the German armour very quickly while only losing 1 tank to enemy fire.

With my opponents anti-tank support wiped out it was fish in a barrel time, with my full force pouring machine-gun and artillery fire into the dug-in German paratroopers and keeping them pinned for most of the game. Finally in the 8th turn a tank assault destroyed enough of the remaining infantry, along with their commander, to force a company morale test and cause the remaining units to flee.

Result: 6–1 Victory (Finally!)

The rest of the Allied generals also did well, with the only lose occurring up in Arnheim, and with the supply lines secured up most of the map things are looking good indeed. For a full comprehensive round up check out Mike Haught's blog Scary Biscuit Studios.

Japanese Army Progress

With Flamescon a little over a month away I've ramped up my efforts to get my Japanese army ready in time. As I want to get a few practice games in before the tournament I've departed slightly from my usual method of painting one unit at a time.

So this week I prepared and assembled my Nikuhaku teams, rapid fire guns and Hohei machine gun teams and spray primed them all. This means that the only unit I'm waiting on is my Battalion Guns, which are due to arrive in our next Flames of War restock due next week. No WIP photos this week since they're all black!

This weekend I'm going to start on the basecoats for the uniforms and also add the texture to the bases. Then I can work on the smaller details for each unit over the next few weeks but they'll be ready for some practice games.

I also have something special planned for my objective markers but you'll have to wait and see…
