Welcome to another Flames
of War Friday Pacific Editon.
Over the past few weeks I've begun working on updating my Japanese infantry
company in preparation for the new Banzai book and preparing for a brand new
play style; fortified lists!
So let's take a look at how my troops are digging in for some defensive
action…

Welcome to our first Flames
of War Friday of 2016! I'd been on a bit of a break from Flames of
War for a few months while working on other projects but with the upcoming
release of new books for the Pacific theatre my 15mm mojo is back.
So let's take a look at what the sunny & sandy Pacific has in store
for us…

Final Preparations
Late last week the final thing I had left to finish off for the Early War
Tournament was to prepare some objective markers. For fun I decided to do some
flat painted objectives rather than scenic ones. For the first marker I found a
Japanese WW2 propaganda image, printed off a template to attach to an objective
base and used a paint-by-numbers approach to replicate it.
For the second I decided to be a bit more adventurous and used a combination
of freehand acrylic and oil painting to reproduce an image featuring almost
every Japanese art trope imaginable, with an extra addition of Godzilla in the
bottom right corner.
With these complete I was packed and ready for a weekend of gaming!

A Bridge too Far Over the River Kwai?
This past weekend was another campaign day for Firestorm Market Garden,
however the games had a little more of an alternative history vibe this time
around to allow for some Flamescon practice. So rather than restrict ourselves
to lists from the two Market Garden books we could play using our lists for the
upcoming tournaments.
So my Japanese infantry found themselves fighting for the Allied cause
against an early war Italian tank list.

Since Flamescon was announced I've shifted things
up a gear to get my forces ready and be able to play some more games with both
my Market Garden list and my Japanese.

As I outlined at the beginning of the year in Planning this Years Project I'll be entering the
Early War tournament with an infantry based Japanese army. Unfortunately due to
all the other projects I've been working on this army has been on the
back-burner for some time but now it's time to kick things into
gear again.
This week I finished off the biggest and most onerous portion of the force,
the Hohei Chutai infantry company with is the army's core. With a total of
108 infantry figures which needed painting it took quite a while and it feels
great to have it complete!
Most of the work had been finished months ago so it was just a matter of
finishing off the basing and a couple of infantry models I'd somehow missed
earlier.

For this week's Flames
of War Friday project we asked our fans over on the Mighty Ape Hobbies Facebook Page to decide which armoured
unit they'd like to see; either the Soviet
T-34 Tankovy ; or the Japanese
Light Sensha Platoon and the ubiquitous T-34 was the winner. So lets take a
closer look at the plastic T-34 Tankovy boxed set.
The T-34 was the most produced tank of World War II and is the mainstay of
Soviet armoured forces for both the mid-war and late war period and this set
enables you to field 2 of the most common variants: the T-34/76 obr
1943 and the T-34/85 obr 1944. The kit includes:
- 5× plastic T-34 hulls
- 5× plastic T-34/76 turrets
- 5× plastic T-34/85 turrets
- 5× metal Tank Commanders
- 15× Rare Earth magnets
- 1× Soviet decal sheet
With both turret versions and magnets included you can magnetise all 5 tanks
so that you can simply swap turrets to change between the T-34/76 and T-34/85.
This gives a great amount of flexibility when choosing writing your lists and
means you can use these tanks for both the mid-war and late war periods. Combine
that with the similar versatility of the Tank
Killer Company and you'll see that this is a fantastic perk for Soviet
players.
