"Gritty, bleak scifi"
5 stars"

I won't summarize the plot too much since you can read from the description.

Children of Men is one of the most realistic sci fi films I've ever seen. This is due mainly to the fact that it's set in the “near-future” where you can spot some technological advancement such as parts of the dashboard integrated into the windshield of the car but overall everything can be recognized as what we have here today.

In this bleak future women have become infertile, and 18 years after this the world has gone to poop. After some unspecificed disasters Britain seems to be the only nation that is still in-tact and the flood of immigrants has become a problem.

I'll just leave the story at that.

First off the cinematography is astounding, the shots are always down low and follows the single main character Theo in a very psuedo-documentary style. The film starts as a slow-burn, the background of the settings are explored, the characters develop well and the relationships between characters are brought out in an effective way when a “truth” is discovered, setting everyone onto the same track.

When there is action it is taken in long-takes, this really kept me engaged as there were no cuts to take me away from this reality despite the visceral action shown on-screen. Wow, am I doing a review or essay I don't even know anymore.

Very highly recommended. My favourite sci-fi movie of all time.

Description

The Year 2027.
The Last Days Of The Human Race.
No Child Has Been Born For 18 Years.
He Must Protect Our Only Hope.

Children of Men envisages a world one generation from now that has fallen into anarchy on the heels of an infertility defect in the population. The world’s youngest citizen has just died at 18, and humankind is facing the likelihood of its own extinction.

Set against a backdrop of London torn apart by violence and warring nationalistic sects, Children of Men follows disillusioned bureaucrat Theo (Owen) as he becomes an unlikely champion of Earth’s survival. When the planet’s last remaining hope is threatened, this reluctant activist is forced to face his own demons and protect her from certain peril.

Review

"Presenting a bleak, harrowing, and yet ultimately hopeful vision of humankind's not-too-distant future, Children of Men is a riveting cautionary tale of potential things to come. Set in the crisis-ravaged future of 2027, and based on the atypical 1993 novel by British mystery writer P.D. James, the anxiety-inducing, action-packed story is set in a dystopian England where humanity has become infertile (the last baby was born in 2009), immigration is a crime, refugees (or "fugees") are caged like animals, and the world has been torn apart by nuclear fallout, rampant terrorism, and political rebellion. In this seemingly hopeless landscape of hardscrabble survival, a jaded bureaucrat named Theo (Clive Owen) is drawn into a desperate struggle to deliver Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), the world's only pregnant woman, to a secret group called the Human Project that hopes to discover a cure for global infertility. As they carefully navigate between the battling forces of military police and a pro-immigration insurgency, Theo, Kee, and their secretive allies endure a death-defying ordeal of urban warfare, and director Alfonso Cuaron (with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki) capture the action with you-are-there intensity. There's just enough humor to balance the film's darker content (much of it coming from Michael Caine, as Theo's aging hippie cohort), and although Children of Men glosses over many of the specifics about its sociopolitical worst-case scenario (which includes Julianne Moore in a brief but pivotal role), it's still an immensely satisfying, pulse-pounding vision of a future that represents a frightening extrapolation of early 21st-century history.
