Description

This book presents an up-to-date review of the field of neutron imaging as an advanced characterization method in science and industry. It focusses on its applications across disciplines from condensed matter research to cultural heritage, from energy research to advanced manufacturing, from environment to mobility, and in general contributions that neutron imaging makes and can make to tackle the pressing issues of today. Before the rich capabilities of neutron imaging are laid out, the reader is introduced to the particular and relevant features of neutrons alongside neutron imaging in the context of other characterization techniques, while also covering the history of neutron imaging and, most importantly, state-of-the-art capabilities and contrast modalities. The book closes with a more technical part on instrumentation, methods and software and data analyses for those readers with an interest not only in practical and scientific applications but also in required instruments and techniques. Key Features Written by editors and contributors from a leading institution in neutron imaging Has an application focus Covers applications in hard and soft matter

Author Biography:

Markus Strobl has been active in neutron scattering, and particularly imaging, instrumentation and applied materials applications, for more than 20 years, having worked at several large-scale neutron sources. He has designed several neutron scattering and imaging instruments and has significantly contributed to advance neutron imaging. He acted as deputy head of the Neutron Instrument Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS), responsible for engineering materials research, geoscience and cultural heritage research. He then took the lead of the Neutron Imaging Group (NIAG, today AMG) at PSI succeeding Dr E. Lehmann. He has been elected as Vice President of the International Society of Neutron Radiography (ISNR) since 2014, and is a board member of the Swiss Society of Neutron Science. Eberhard Lehmann is a pioneer of neutron imaging, who introduced digital neutron imaging, particularly in Europe, and built the first neutron imaging user facilities and user program in various fields of research, from geology, nuclear materials, electro-chemistry and energy materials, and construction materials. He has built up the world leading group for neutron imaging, NIAG at PSI, and, until his retirement in 2017, challenged the resolution limits and capabilities of neutron imaging in condensed matter science. He acted as President of ISNR from 2010 to 2014 and was chair of the WCNR-10 conference in Switzerland. He was awarded the status of Honorary Member in 2018.
