Description

The Irish Terrier is a breed of dog that is a member of the Terrier typing. The breed originates from Ireland and is considered to be one of the oldest breeds of terrier. The Irish Terrier was originally developed for its gameness, as it has a great innate instinct to hunt and kill vermin. The Irish Terrier was famously described as 'the poor man's sentinel, the farmer's friend, and the gentleman's favorite, ' by F. M. Jowett in their work 'The Irish Terrier.' Breed standards describe the Irish Terrier as racy, rectangular shaped and of a red coloration. The breed is powerful without being overly heavy. The breed's double coat comes in a variety of red colorations and its one of its most unique features. The outer coat is wiry in texture and should never been silky, woolly or wavy. The inner part of the breed's coat, called the 'underwood, ' should be densely packed and also of a red coloration. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Irish Terrier. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Irish Terrier with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Irish Terrier is very good with people and has a high sense of loyalty towards their family unit. The Irish Terrier is a great choice for families with young children, as the Irish Terrier is an extremely tolerant breed and can handle a fair deal of 'rough housing.' However it is important to note that the Irish Terrier has a high prey drive, due to their hunting history. It is therefore not recommend to keep an Irish Terrier in the same household as a smaller pet (such as a cat) - although it is possible to socialize your Irish Terrier with small animals during its puppyhood which could lead to the Irish Terrier living peacefully with smaller household pets. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Irish Terrier has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Irish Terrier has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Irish Terrier's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Irish Terrier, raising your Irish Terrier from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between!
