Ponyo is an adorable film, with no real villains and gentle conflict between the characters.

The film, like all of Miyazaki's work, is visually stunning. The film starts under the sea with lots of weird and beautiful fish.

Ponyo herself is a twsit on the Little Mermaid, she's a goldfish who is curious about the world above the sea. When she meets Sosuke and accidentally ingests some of his blood she gains magical powers.

Recommended for any fan of animation and especially little kids.

I've seen this movie described as a remake of the Little Mermaid, but apart from the fact that the fish girl has red hair and becomes human through magic, it bears very little resemblance either to the original fairytale, or to Disney's version.

It is a beautifully made movie, although I found the English voice acting to be a bit off – the voice of the boy wasn't right. It sounds much better in Japanese with subtitles.

The story is funny, dramatic, and at times sad. It is an original story – not an imitation or remake of something else.

This movie will appeal more to small children than adults, but is entertaining enough for anybody who likes a good animated movie. Don't let the simple graphic style fool you, as it progresses you'll get sucked into the pretty.
